Differential Bio and FermBase by CREMER are expanding their existing collaboration into a strategic partnership. Together, they want to support fermentation companies from early-stage development through to industrial scale-up, combining Differential Bio's automated laboratory platform and machine learning with CREMER's expertise in raw materials, product solutions and scalable supply chains.

‍

"With Differential Bio, we have found a partner that is taking entirely new approaches to raw material development with the help of artificial intelligence and robotics and brings outstanding expertise in this field," says Dr. Christian Flach, CEO of CREMER.

‍

From the lab to industrial scale

The partners combine their strengths along the entire development path. FermBase by CREMER brings CREMER Group expertise in raw materials, product solutions and scalable supply chains. Differential Bio, as a strategic partner, complements this with automated development processes, data analysis and AI-supported optimization.

‍

In practice, both work hand in hand. Differential Bio's software and AI solutions enable data-driven process development: its robotic laboratory automation generates the targeted data they need, and its machine learning models identify the most promising solutions, including combinations never tested in the lab. FermBase by CREMER contributes its raw material know-how from the start and brings the jointly developed solutions to industrial scale with reliable supply.

‍

For fermentation companies, the result is more than a raw material supply: solutions developed together with them, faster, with more efficient processes and a more successful path to industrial scale.

‍

"With Differential Bio, we are advancing the transition towards bio-based production: our robotic laboratory automation generates targeted data for AI applications, while our software and AI solutions enable data-driven process development," says Christian Spier, CEO of Differential Bio. "Together with CREMER, we can develop faster and support the fermentation industry in making processes more efficient and scaling them more successfully."

‍

Y-Base Blend as the first joint project

The first joint project shows how this works in practice. Y-Base Blend, the standardized trace-element blend for yeast fermentation that FermBase by CREMER launched in September, was developed jointly by the two companies. During product development, more than 50,000 possible trace-element combinations were narrowed down to 3,300 experiments using different yeast strains on Differential Bio's automated laboratory platform. Machine learning then guided the selection, ultimately resulting in the final blend. The joint whitepaper describes the full method: read more about the whitepaper.

‍

What comes next

Through the strategic partnership, FermBase by CREMER and Differential Bio intend to develop further technology-based offerings for the fermentation industry. Y-Base Blend is the starting point.
